For the first time in the project I seriously thought it wasn’t going to happen for me today. I didn’t leave the house till 3pm as I was going away on a trip and then spent 2 hours driving, arrived in a strange place and a seriously dodgy ‘hotel’ at 5.15pm..no one to be seen. I’ve dinner with peers at 8pm but don’t want my project to be photographers for the next 3 days, although there are some amazing people on this course.
I hung out at Publix. Not cool and in danger of being reported just for being weird. I was turned down by and old lady and an old man..I have only been turned downed 3 times in the whole project, my confidence was wavering.
Just as I was considering giving up a beautiful, happy face came into view. She looked open and pleasant, the sort of person if I approached correctly would be happy to talk to me.
She’d come to he supermarket to buy Jello. I love that.
Name: Prinya
Occupation: Walgreens as a Shift Manager
1. Where were you born and raised?
‘I was born in Maryland but I was raised all over the world. My Dad worked for the National Security Agency so we travelled a lot. We lived in Italy, Islamabad, Pakistan, Virginia, Thailand. My favourite place would have to be Rome in Italy.’
2.Tell me a childhood memory.
‘My Dad, I’m a Daddies girl, we would read together and when I was younger he would sing me to sleep. He would have to do it as my Mum couldn’t sing very well. I can’t remember the song, how it goes but it was kind of Jazzy.’
3.What is your favourite season and why?
‘I do like Winter because we travelled overseas and I remember the seasons. Winter is my favourite because you have the snow.’
4.Tell me about someone you love.
‘I love my fiancé, his name is Geoff and he works in the same job as me. I met him when I was in my old store, we relocated, he worked in Pizza Hut and would bring us pizza. He is very kind, nothing that you could say to him would phase his love.’
5.What words of wisdom do you have for the reader about life?
I think the main thing that I have learned about life is not taking things for granted. I just feel like when I get older, my parents get older, my first animal died last year, I’d never really experienced that, I’d lived everywhere so we had never had a pet that long. Having her die made me realise I need to spend more time with people. I’d just never felt that. So I feel like that you should take time and be with the people you love or spend time doing what you like to do.’
6.Dreams for the future.
‘I would hope to be finally graduated. I’m studying psychology, criminology and the mind. I also want to deal with people who have special needs. I want to understand why some people with special needs are more artistic or academic. I saw one film of a guy who developed late autism who wasn’t originally artistic but now is painting masterpieces.’
Prinya was a real sweetheart, a lovely young woman who is older than she looks. I asked her if she was over 18 for my release, she was 29! Such a baby face.
In front of me was this sweet young woman, quietly spoken, lovingly talking about Geoff, off to buy jello but she also has an avid interest in horror movies and has her sassy moments, I have seen her FB page. Never underestimated the quiet ones.
