Day 10 505050 Dianne

Day 10 505050 Dianne

Human beings are wonderful creatures. We face loss every day & survive it, we stare our own mortality in the eye but live each day with hope and happiness for the future. What other choice do we have? I don’t mean to make anyone feel sad or emotional.  This project wasn’t & isn’t about reaching out for stories of pain & loss.  I find it hard to listen when somebody tells me a story that hurts them & if they cry or well up, I will too. Let me tell you just a little of the story about my next subject, as much as you can when you have only spent 15 minutes with them.  When they have lived long enough to have mature children and adult Grandchildren they have lived a life that is a novel all of its own. This project is a snapshot..just a glimpse.  I hope it helps people to look beyond the presentation, seek out the reality behind the facade or discover the sadness behind the smile. Dianne is special.  She’s the Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Daughter & Friend that you wished you had.  When she greets you with her soft beautiful smile, eyes filled with genuine affection, arms splayed ready for the warmest embrace, it feels like home.  Her voice has the delicious lilt of her home town that should be recorded to send babies off to sleep at night, she really is a sweetheart.  I didn’t know until today that this wonderful woman has had to endure such incredible loss. Name: Dianne Occupation: Realtor Where were you born and raised. Greenville, South Carolina. ‘I was...
Day 9 505050 Jamie

Day 9 505050 Jamie

How long does it take for you to like someone?  I’m a love you till you give me reason to question what I did wrong kind of girl. Jamie is the kind of young woman that many women might avoid on first sight.  Tall, beautiful, big smile, amazingly fit..she is the kind of woman that intimidates many at first.  She absolutely doesn’t deserve that.  I wasn’t intimidated, I was in awe!  Jamie looked amazing and I congratulate that, she takes great care of herself.  But, then again, beauty and success doesn’t intimidate me, ugliness of heart and mind does. Name: Jamie Burke Occupation: Personal Trainer & Co – Proprietor of VI Levels Gym Winter Garden & Mum of a 3 year old gorgeous boy & 6 year old beautiful daughter. 1.Where were you born and raised? Toronto, Ohio (A very small community with less than 5,000 residents not that far from the border of Canada) Jamie is very proud of her home town, the people, the community, they come together as family and support one another which at times in her life has been very important to her. Disney bought Jamie to Florida as a Business Management Student where she eventually ran a hotel, but never stopped her passion which was training & personal training. 2. Tell me a childhood memory. ‘You always love seeing your parents proud, I remember being good at track and being really good in my area.  My Mom, she was always proud of us but never said it but I remember she was at every track meeting, she would be there with this big video...
Day 4 50/50/50 Rooster

Day 4 50/50/50 Rooster

I feel torn today.  On one hand I met this incredible man with an amazing story, on the other I feel like typing his words and sharing them with you is breaking some sort of bond, abusing his vulnerability. I’m not a chat show host, I’m not looking for tears.  My empathy with people is just a reality, I am asking everyone the same questions just sometimes those questions open flood gates to more. Earlier tonight someone came to dinner, a photographer..you met her on day 2.  I admitted that what I enjoy most about this project is the stories..the image is second to that.  Does that mean I’m not a photographer and what does it mean that I want to hear your stories?  I want you to talk to me. Get it off your chest..share..let it go. Not everyone opens up to me, I know when they don’t.  That’s ok too.  I respect those people who are mysterious..apparently it’s a flaw in my nature that I am not..that is once what I was told. (Do I look Bothered, No mystery here) Enough about me.  Today I had a history lesson and I cannot think about it without feeling emotional..apartheid.  It wasn’t just something in the history books. Day 4 William Larry Thomas..AKA Rooster Occupation: Maintenance Director Rooster is a big beautiful man.  He has eyes that reach right down into his soul and hands that fix everything that is broken..even your heart. We don’t know each other but I am confident in my words. 1, Where were you born and raised? ‘South Philly, grew up there till I...
Day 3 50/50/50 Amy

Day 3 50/50/50 Amy

Today was tough.  Who am I looking for.  I just don’t know until I see them.  I’m not talking extremes just a connection, something that makes me want to find out more. I’m queuing for coffee, I had time today so had been driving about for a couple of hours looking for someone to approach. There’s nothing stand out different to Amy..it was her presence.  Strong, confident.  A woman in control and clearly a woman loving life and carrying the positive gene.  I like her already..she is wearing a t-shirt that says ‘Believe in Yourself’. Make-up free, straight from the gym and an aura that screams..’Sorry. Not sorry’. I buy her a coffee and we sit and chat like we have known each other for a long time. Day 3: Amy Occupation: Medical Sales – Working with Oncology Amy is smiling, she cannot help herself, to not smile is against her makeup.  I’m left energised the whole day by her happiness.  We talk a lot about her life..more than my general questions..can I break my own rules and just find out everything? Where were you born & raised? Pennslyvannia, just outside New York. Amy lived in a really rural area, she grew up on a farm.  5 miles to the next residence or any other human life.  Her childhood was void of outside influence.  It was creative she says and by all accounts sounds idyllic.  Big family gatherings, feral children..imagination required, the simple life. During her University (College) years Amy came to Florida to work at Disney in their college programme.  I was a little over enthusiastic at the idea...
Day 2. 50/50/50 Laura

Day 2. 50/50/50 Laura

Occupation: Photographer & ‘Snap’ Festival Coordinator/ Creator. I didn’t seek my subject out today, she came to see me.  Not to be my 50/50/50 thats a nice coincidence but to collect her PG Tips! (She was running low on her English girl medicine!) Laura is an Associate from the UK.  We have met at industry events, in fact I have photographed her before, we have chatted over social media, share mutual interests and friends.  Enviably Laura & her lovely hubby Pete are travelling the US.  Visiting various cities, catching up with friends and sharing their amazing pictures of these places online for us all to enjoy.  This is all a prelude to shooting a wedding in Tobago!  I’m pleased for them both, the trip is well deserved, they work hard and judging by their relaxed ‘holiday mode’ appearance they are throughly enjoying it.  I’m glad I got to spend a couple hours with them and hear about their travels and future plans whilst finding out a little more about Laura. I’ve watched Laura Babb on her journey with photography for a few years and when ever I see anything slightly resembling a Flamingo I shall always think of her.  When we first met it was clear she had an ambitious determination to succeed, could recognise an opportunity and knew where she wanted to be.  I have seen her style develop and grow, her love of architecture & landscapes in portraits is very prolific and easily recognised.  Well respected in the industry as her sold out photography festival will testify, she is all set for big things. Personally, I think more than...
Cary – Fabulous II

Cary – Fabulous II

The lovely Cary from Wales with the bluest eyes I have ever seen. Quiet and beautiful, the camera loves her face.  She has that timeless elegance that just looks peaceful and relaxed when photographed.  She reminds me of Kiera Knightly in Atonement but with a Welsh accent! Cary is a successful photographer, Wife, Mother and friend to many. But not a good navigator..she went all round the houses before she made it to the shoot!  I’m so glad she made it though as it wouldn’t have been the same without her.   1. In one sentence, tell us who you are and what do you do? I’m Cary, I photograph newborns, children and families, and I also do professional headshots. 2. Whats the favourite thing about your job Crikey. Too many to list! I love what I do, and I can’t imagine doing anything else 3. Who do you admire the most in your work? and why? People who follow their vision, who break new ground, who aren’t afraid to be unique. 4. How did it feel to be photographed? It felt a little odd, but in a good way! I’m so used to being on the other side of the camera! 5. Did it improve your confidence? It was an interesting experience, I think all photographers should try it as it’s quite a different perspective to being on the other side of the camera. 6. Would you recommend it to anybody else? Yes, it was great fun! The whole experience of getting prepped, dressed and photographed. 7. Name one thing you love about yourself My sense of humour. I’d...
